Connect with the land and its people
Travel should connect you with place and community. That’s why our lodges have been carefully integrated with the surrounding environment and people to create a functioning ecosystem where everyone benefits.
BATOKA LODGES SUPPORT THE SURROUNDING ECOLOGY
We work with park game rangers to prevent, detect, and extinguish bushfires in the dry season and take direct responsibility for maintaining hundreds of kilometres of firebreaks.
We provide extensive support in the form of wages, training, and supplies to multiple anti-poaching units who have been instrumental in pushing poachers out of our reserves.
We work with various organizations that focus on changing the relationship local communities have with wildlife that can pose a threat to their crops, homes and livestock.
As the income generated by tourism uplifts the local people, attitudes are changing.
As our lodges thrive, so do our communities
When you stay at Batoka Lodge a portion of the funds generated from your stay goes directly towards benefitting and empowering local communities.
Mobile dental clinics, village boreholes, water pumps, building schools, libraries and providing educational aids are some of the ways we give back. But it’s not just about giving, the Gorges locals have so much to share with our guests in return. This, then, is African ecotourism at its best.
We put people first
Batoka Lodges are people centred. From the people in our communities, to our teams and valued guests, we choose to learn from each other and consistently look for better and mutually beneficial ways to operate. We are committed to preserving what is already here and creating opportunities for our societies to grow and thrive.
EMPOWER LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS
Together with Collaborative Crafts Projects, being involved in ecotourism in Zimbabwe means we create economic opportunities for women. Female artisans from surrounding communities are offered development and design workshops which include international clients opportunities and shows to sell their products. The women are further supported by capital investment funding from Batoka.
EDUCATE AND UPSKILL
Knowledge is power. From building schools and libraries to providing skills development and training to Batoka staff and the surrounding community, learning is at the core of our ecotourism work in Zimbabwe.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
The Tesse Fund is a dedicated fund set up to empower staff members within the Batoka Hospitality family and leverage our ecotourism efforts. Employees are encouraged to come up with proposals for projects that will benefit their local community to receive financial support from the fund. A percentage of the revenue from guest stays is allocated to our Tesse Fund.
